I almost don't want to spoil your melancholy, but I was one of those kids who took art and music classes, played the piano and the guitar and went to Hebrew school. I can say that it all shaped me as a person in very subtle and positive ways and I wouldn't have given up any of it. Just the memory of my dad driving me to guitar lessons can get me through almost anything. I think it all means more to children that parents can possibly know, even though the physical remnants of past activities get left behind with the stuffed animals (I still have my guitar and my not-so-dried-up paints, but I fervently hope that my mom has thrown out the inept watercolors and the awful high school poetry, *shudder*).
