vremyavpered wrote about Dale Chihuly exhibit at the De Young Museum. I must admit that for years I was sneering at Chihuly's work, snorting indignantly when it was referred to as "art". However, what passes for high art now is sometimes so beyond the pale (Jeff Koons anyone?) that Dale Chihuly has suddenly started looking pretty good. His work still retains two important criteria: craftsmanship and beauty.
OK, OK, I know, of course, that craftsmanship is mostly created by an army of underpaid and overworked art slaves with MFA's, but it is still there, nonetheless. Last year, at the Chatsworth Sculpture Exhibition, Chihuly was represented by this spectacular work.

Well, What Would Darcy Do had he encountered this wonder floating on his Pond?

I think he would have reconsidered jumping into the lake. Serious damage can occur.
I saw a bunch of Chihuly's stuff in Chicago in 2002--I must say, beyond noting that it's pretty blown glass, his art is absolutely lost on me.

*Shakes head* the things that pass for "art" these days. It looks like a cross between a Chinese New Year parade and a Vlad-the-Impaler wet dream.

LOL Vlad-the-Impaler! You are too funny, Irene, dearest, but I think I have known this for a while now. :)

I did feel quite clever about Vlad the Impaler, though ;)
